HOW IMPORTANT IS COLLAGEN TO OUR SKIN?
If you have been researching what to add on your skincare routine, the term collagen is probably no longer a novel term for you. In fact, collagen has been making a buzz lately; be it creams to skin supplements. But, do you know what collagen is for and why is it essential to our skin? If you are not sure, then you are on the right page!
What is collagen?
According to the Cleveland Clinic, collagen is the most abundant protein in our skin. And if you can recall from your Biology lessons in high school, proteins are what constitute 75-80% of our skin. Yeah. You can probably understand now the gravity of the role, collagen plays in the appearance and structure of our skin.
Why is collagen vital to our skin?
Collagen acts as the skin’s support. Along with elastin (i.e. another protein), collagen provides elasticity and firmness that the skin needs to function. Naturally, our body produces collagen. However, the production of collagen declines as we grow older. Consequently, as the amount of collagen in our skin diminishes, the more our skin will lose its firmness and elasticity. Thus, the skin will start to sag and ta-dah! WRINKLES. To prevent this, we’ve listed several factors that cause collagen decline in the latter part of this article.
Factors that causes collagen loss:
Age. As aforementioned, the production of collagen in our body declines with age. Studies have shown that at about the age of 40, our body’s production of proteins can decrease by up to 1% per year. And by the age of 70, this loss is approximately 30% annually. Given this, there are several supplements and creams that you can try to attempt a reverse in skin aging.
Sun Exposure. Being exposed to ultraviolet rays causes our skin’s connective tissues (i.e. collagen and elastin) to break down, Mayo Clinic says. That is why sunblocks are our friend.
Smoking. This can lead to a change in our body’s blood circulation and can contribute to the appearance of wrinkles. There’s really nothing that we can say more about this than either lessen smoking or quit.
Additionally, collagen is the natural anti-aging magician. Collagen is one of the most well-known ingredients that promote glowing, youthful skin. Due to its primary function that keeps the elasticity and firmness of our skin, collagen is vital in keeping our skin appearing healthy and vibrant. Taking collagen supplements or topical collagen can reduce wrinkles and fine lines leading to smooth and supple skin.
