However, we have to face the fact that the summer can be brutal especially to our skin. Staying for too long under the heat of summer can result in wrinkles, dark spots, and worse, skin cancer. That is why it is essential to not forget to take care of your skin whilst enjoying the summer.
Here are 10 tips on how to protect your skin in summer:
1. Refrain from staying under the sun from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. This is when the sun is at its peak and has the highest chance of causing sunburns. If it is inevitable for you to be outdoors at these hours, never forget to take an umbrella with you.
2. Use sunscreens. When choosing a sunscreen, always remember that the higher the SPF number, the more protection from UV rays it provides. It is recommended by the American Academy of Dermatology that you use at least SPF 30. Remember to re-apply your sunscreen every two hours or after going to the pool.
3. Wear the right sunglasses. Protective sunglasses with UVA and UVB protection will help protect your eyes and the skin around it from the sun.
4. Exfoliate. Your skin strives to stay healthy and recuperate from any irritation (e.g. sunburns) especially during summer. Exfoliating can give your skin a boost by removing dead skin cells on your body. However, remember not to over-exfoliate.
5. Stay hydrated. Summer heat and having more outdoor times can lead to internal dehydration that can lead to headaches and lethargy. Drink at least 8 glasses or 1.9 L of water to maintain the critical moisture balance in your body.
6. Use toner. Especially during summer, your skin will secrete more oil. That’s why it is important to stash away a good toner to keep your skin clean and oil-free. Don’t forget to pay attention to your T-zone since this is the part of your face that secretes the most oil during summer.
7. Change your moisturizer. Change from the heavy moisturizer from winter to a lightweight and non-greasy moisturizer (it’s a plus if it has SPF) for summer to help lock in moisture in your face.
8. Monitor your skin. Check if there are any changes to your birthmarks, moles, and freckles and have a regular skin check-up from a dermatologist.
9. Have a healthy diet. A healthy diet comprised of fruits, vegetables, and whole grains can give your skin a boost. Also, refrain from oily foods.
10. Make a choice toward a healthy lifestyle. Exercise is vital in maintaining a healthy body. This improves blood circulation, ergo your skin cells get more oxygen. Also, you can maintain healthy skin by not smoking as smoking damages your skin’s collagen and elastin.
